  Aperture Priority Mode | The Reciprocal Rule

  Hello Sudhir Sir,

  I recently bought the all in one pack and enjoy every minute of your courses. I had question the reciprocal rule. I use Nikon D500 along with Nikkor 200-500mm. I have the below questions:

  1) When shooting from a stationary position, with my aperture set at f5.6 and ISO 100, is it the correct point to start and look at the shutter speed I am getting and then using the reciprocal rule to arrive at the shutter speed I want for my shots?

  2) For shooting birds in flight in aperture mode on a bright day where the lighting available is pushing the shutter speed to 1/2000th with the Aperture at f5.6 and ISO 100, is the exposure compensation the only thing which will help in this scenario so that I don’t get blown out images? Can I push my f-number to f8 or f11 to get sharp images with the right exposure?

  Yes, your approach is correct. But instead of starting at ISO 100, depending on the lighting, you can start at ISO 400 or even ISO 800.

  For the second part, no need to push beyond f8. Depending on the lens, please do check the MTF chart to understand the sharpness of lens at a given aperture. And yes, exposure compensation is the one which is going to help you control the blown out areas.
