Hi, I am flying into New Dehli/India for the first time in a couple of weeks. I was hoping someone could recommend some good birding photography spots around the city that are suitable for day trips.

    Thanks Matt

Hi, Matt, there are many birding spots in and around New Delhi. First one is Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, Chandu, Haryana, which is nearest to IGI airport, New Delhi. Second is Okhla Bird Sanctuary at Delhi-Noida border. Third is Surajpur Bird Sanctuary in Greater Noida, Gautam Budh Nagar, which is farthest from IGI Airport, New Delhi. All three are proper bird sanctuary. Besides these, there are some bird specific birding spots around New Delhi, which should be visited with local expert bird guide like Bondsi, near BSF camp, Sohna, Haryana for Indian Pitta, Indian pacific flycatcher. Mangar bani, Haryana for Indian Pitta. Dhanauri wetland for Sarus Crane, Bristled Grassbird, Yellow Bittern, Chinnamon Bittern etc.

      Great suggestions by Arun!

      Hi Matt,

Delhi and around have some great birding places. The good thing is you more or less know what to expect at specific places.

Some good places in NCR I would not miss:

      1. Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary – diverse variety (but beautiful landscape)

      2. Mangar Bani – primarily for Indian Pitta and Paradise Fly Catcher

      3. Dhanauri Wetlands – Sarus Crane

If you have time over the weekend, 2 days trip – I very strongly recommend Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, a 3 hour drive from Delhi but worth it

Plus there are many more as pointed out. These are all close within 1-2 hours from Delhi, depending where you stay. Delhi is fantastic for birding! All the best!

There is also a fantastic birding community called Delhi Bird Photographers who are always happy to help. You should go with a guide and there are some very good ones there. The people in the group can direct you to one: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DelhiBirdPhotographers/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT

Thanks Arun, that’s awesome and very helpful. Appericate it. I will definitely try my best to get out there and see a few of the sites you mentioned.

      Cheers Matt
