The steps I followed were :
Used the color picker and picked a color just at the bottom of the part I wanted to hide.
Then used a paint brush (mode – normal , opacity 80 % , flow 70 %) to paint over the part i wanted to hide.

Adjusted exposure
Made the shadows dark, white little white.
Reduced the highlights.
Masked the background and reduced the highlights in background.
Painted with brush and made dark more areas that were brighter and can be still seen as bright sections in background.
In photoshop – added a level adjustment.
