For such wide shots, you may want to try different compositions – rule of thirds with either the hills or the sky dominating.

Also, some of the landscape is completely dark in shadows – you could try different exposure options and selectively adjust in post processing.

It was actually washed out – heavy clouds blocking early morning sun. Given the sand was more or less a neutral tonality, I left it at centre weighted, and intentionally slightly over exposed shooting in M mode to try and wash out the background.
