I purchased a Canon EF 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens to use on my Canon 7D body for my trip to Masai Mara 10 years ago. I also purchased Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II and Canon Extender EF 2x III. I could never use these extender during that trip because the lens could not focus. After 15 years and with the new mirrorless technology I bought the Canon R5 Body recently. I use this lens on the new body and I am quite happy. Unfortunately I am unable to use the extension tubes even now. Please let me know where I am going wrong. Incidentally, I have signed up for your all-in-one package and I have picked up some good tips for bird photography.

Extension Tubes are used in Macro Photography. They just bring the plane of focus closer to your lens and magnify the subject. You must have confused them with Extenders which are lens systems which take your focal plane farther away and act as telescopic additions to your lens.
